That's what comes to my mind.  But, few know the actual reason we are celebrating this holiday. We know it has something to do with America, the flag, and independence.  On July 4, 1776, United States of America declared its independence from Britain.  So today is America’s Birthday! My Project:  I missed a Design Team project this week, courtesy of a hospital visit, and I really wanted the challenge of making the windchime….so, I decided to make a patriotic windchime for my project.  I took 4 chimes, and attached them by fishing line from a metal ring. I spaced them equal distance apart around the ring.  I then attached a bar lengthwise to help ring the chimes.  The cross bar had fishing line that ran down to 2 white and 1 red bed ontop of a wire incased marble to help sway the crossbar.  I attached 3 equal length pieces of general purpose jewelry chain by large jumprings from the metal ring.  I attached the 3 pieces of chain to one large jump ring.  For the top of my chime, I used 2 left over aluminum dinner trays.  I used a star template and connected them together by folding and pressing tabs I made on the star points.  To straighten out all of the creases from the dinnerware, I ran it thru my Big Kick between two cutting pads and flattened it.  I then outlined a flag pattern, and painted using acrylic paints. I then applied Tim Holtz, Vintage Photo, Crackle Distress Crackly Glaze over the paint to make it look more vintage “Americana-ish.” I inserted a large eyelet in the top and bottom bottom of the star.  I connected the chime assembly to the bottom, and the hangar loop via a large jumpring from the top.  I hope you have enjoyed my project.

For my project, I decided to work on a Favor Box for a baby shower.  These are for the shower for my first grandchild, to be more specific.  For the many of you who aren’t aware, in addition to papercrafting as a hobby, I am a professional soapmaker.  I typically work with cold-process, but for these favors, I was going to turn to glycerin, because of it’s gentleness, ease to color and ease of fragrance.  (All of my soaps contain only natural, organic ingredients and are fragranced with essential oils, not synthetic fragrance oils).  I have silicone muffin cups in a circle shape. That hold 4 oz. of glycerin soap.  

I made the soap, poured, and when set to a thick gel, I inserted the rubber ducks.  The soap is scented with Lavender Essential Oil and colored with natural oxides.  The rubber duck in the soap makes the soap float, so while mom is giving baby a bath (or simply enjoying one of her own), there will be no more floundering for sunken soap. 

  

I also made a Favor box for the soap to go into.  This box was made from a file purchased from svgcuts.com.  The box opening measures 4”x4”x4” assembled. I used thick cardstock to make the box as sturdy as possible.  I used two yellow cutouts of the ducks on the top and a pull tab for the top of the box.  I added shredded package filler and the soap, and it is perfect!  I can’t wait to make the rest!

Scrapping With Lisa's Designs Team Challenge

    For my home décor project, I decided to do a fabric wall wreath.  I started with an embroidery hoop as the base.  I used the banner and the fireworks files from the 4^th of July set in Lisa’s store.  For the banner, I used DCVW “Jupiter Stars on Cream” and Paper Pizazz “Patriotic Stripe” paper and DCVW “The Heirloom Stack.”  I used adhesive script Alpha stickers to create my wreath sentiment, and adhered the banner pieces to Hemp Twine.  I hot glued the twine to the embroidery hoop.  I then took strips of canvas, tulle, grosgrain and satin ribbon, and coordinating fabric and tied them in double knots, alternating materials around the wreath.  I trimmed them longer strips down, for a more uniform look.  I then embellished around the sentiment with rosettes cut from Tim Holtz rosettes dies, and the stars from the July 4^th set.  I hope you have enjoyed my project.

Scrapping with Lisa's Designs Weather Bear DT Challenge

Today, the complete Design Team will showcase both Rain Gear bear and Winter Clothes Bear in various ways to show the versatility of this file.

For my project, I got a little ambitious.  We are to show the versatility of the wonder files Lisa has in her shop, so, I decided to craft a “Weather Board” for the Pre-K class at my daughter’s school.  Teachers are so short on time, patience and cash these days, with so many being asked to buy their own classroom props, stay late, come in early….so, I made a learning tool for the class using our very own Weather Bear.  Our team’s assignment was Winter Bear.  I went about the construction a little differently, in that I made the bear standalone and assembled the clothes to be interchangeable.  I also enlarged the file, so that assembled, he is a little over 1 foot tall.  Once the bear was assembled, I laminated him.  I also laminated his clothes.  This IS Pre-K afterall! Lol.  I printed some word association cards for simple words associated with the winter and laminated those as well.  I permantly mounted the bear on a piece of 12 x 24 background, attached a green border and used seasonal chipboards to accent the corners.  Both the clothes and the word association cards are easily removable.  I was so pleased with how weather bear turned out, that although I have until August to finish this project, I decided to do the Rain Bear Clothes also, along with word association cards and rain themed chipboard.  I am hoping this little guy gets a lot of use in the Pre-K class!

My project today is a one page layout with 3 photo frames and journaling tags.  I must admit, I don’t scrapbook much.  Infact, I’m intimated by scrapbooking. All elements/embellishments/pictures coming together to form a large cohesive work of art…..well my canvas of comfort typically lies with cards and tags….but ALAS, this isn’t a “ABCs of Cardmaking Challenge” is it?  So, rather than go to my well used stacks~ Of which most of you are familiar, lol, I decided to go to my “What the hell was I thinking when I bought this” stack.  We all have one….great finds at the time, but then you realize that it’s a scrapbooking kit…and while all the elements can be used on cards, altered items, etc….they all just fit with scrapbooking.  Well, my challenge to myself, within the Blog Hop Challenge, was to actually create a layout using ONLY the materials provided in the kit I chose.  These kits that I have found are awesome….They are from “The Girlie Paperie” and all have a vintage flair, most with very feminine undertones ~that style describes me perfectly.  By using a kit, I wanted to show beginning scrapbookers that you REALLY CAN make a layout from preassembled kits (not to be mistaken for preassembled pages).  The kits contain several sheets of double sided paper, all coordinating, ribbon, buttons, brads, tags, die cuts, journaling tags, flowers…..etc.  The page you will see literally only required me to use my own adhesive.  My experience with scrapbooking has been the intimidating time factor, the many many elements, etc.  Scrapbooks can be very elaborate….but for an intimidated beginner…a kit like this may be a good place to start.  As you begin recognizing space and pattern fits, along with themes and cohesiveness, you can slowly add in other elements, such as embossing, stamping, inking, distressing, supplementing with your own embellishments, etc.  I think this is a great way to be less intimidated by something out of the gate, and then flourish once you create a beautiful page with none of the painstaking work it takes.  What first discouraged me about scrapbooking was how elementary my first layout looked….I didn’t know what die cuts were, I didn’t know techniques like sanding/distressing/inking….I still had anxiety attacks at trimming pictures down!  It didn’t help that I was cropping with EXPERIENCED scrapbookers who had their paper separated into drawers by “themes” and had every embellishment you could think of.  No kidding….that crop session was my first and last for awhile.  I just wasn’t as good as these gals, and there  a huge learning curve.  So, for those of you who want to scrapbook and are unsure of what to do, don’t have the time to cut, trim, stamp, emboss, etc.  I made this page from The Girlie Paperie Vintage Floral Kit.  This kit retails for $20 and you receive 6 double-sided stock weight pages and ribbon, chipboard letters, flowers, stamp/postcard/tag diecuts/buttons/brads/flowers/etc.   Everything you need to complete at least 6 single page layouts, adding only your own chosen adhesive and …voila!  You have a beautifully, classy page that you can literally assemble in a short time.  Knowing products like this are out there, you can begin slowly, while still having a great, non-preschool looking page (unlike my first!) and then slowly increase your comfort level to creating your own die cuts, including other finishing and embellishing options, etc. ….here is my simple, yet non-stress inducing layout complete from a “kit.

Scrapping with Lisa's Designs~Design Team Challenge

Team Princess is up this week with a cute butterfly card.  This butterfly is made from the Strawberry Shortcake file and can be found under vintage TV shows or by following this link, http://www.scrappingwithlisadesigns.com/item_14/Strawberry-Shortcake.htm 

The key to this week’s project was to create a card with this butterfly, however, the card must have dimensions included.                        

For my butterfly, I used KC Company “Wild Raspberry Stack”.  To begin my project, I decided to actually make the butterfly the card rather than an element of a card.  First, I took the .svg file, and assembled it on my SCAL mat.  Then I welded it together, copied, flipped and joined the two outlines and cut on kraft paper.  This is the foundation for the card.  Next, I took various papers from the Wild Raspberry Stack and cut the elements of the butterfly, cutting multiples of different sizes in contrasting patterned paper.  I then assembled the elements of the butterfly using 3-D Zots and 3-D Foam Squares.  I then stamped a sentiment in the large flower.  The finished card measures roughly 6” x 6”.

Her Craft Kre8tions "Thinking Outside the Yoke" Design Team Project

Welcome to Her Craft Kre8tions first ever Blog Hop which we are calling Thinking Outisde the Yoke. Each Design Team Member was given a paper mache egg and were to transform this into something other than what was given to them originally. Our Design Team is to think outside of the "card" and do something other than cards and layouts. What a challenge .... could you meet this challenge?

Let's start with thinking outside of the yoke of our eggs . . . .

For my project. I used my egg to create a skirt on a jewelry holder.  I cut the  egg in a petal like fashion and folded flip them out.  I secured 20 guage wire to the underneath to make them repositional.  I imagined these could hold bracelets and rings.  The metal holders and stand have been fashioned from coat hangers bonded together.  These have been inserted into the torso of a Barbie doll who lost a leg in a tragic Golden Retriever accident.  I removed the other appendages and head….I quickly got over the fact that my crafting trash can looked like a serial killer dumping ground, because my project was taking better shape than I could imagine.  The brown paper that was orignally around the egg was used to decopauge the “skin” on my manequin.  I decopauged fabric around the torso and “egg” skirt to create the dress.  I then added trim, both fabric and beaded, and decorative pearls as wire end caps.   I have to say, I am quite pleased with the outcome.  I hope you have enjoyed my project and see how you can transform the simplist of things into the most creative of projects.  Please visit our Design Team page and my DT sisters pages to see all their wonderful creations.!
